Last night's Dodger game was just plain craziness. The most surprising aspect of the game between the Dodgers and Padres was Juan Uribe hitting the go-ahead home run in the 8th inning. Uribe being a Dodger hero, just for one night at least, was a shock to me and probably most Dodger fans as well. The second most surprising aspect of last night's Dodger game was a scumbag named Carlos Quentin charging the mound after getting plunked by Dodger starter Zack Geinke.
The Padres were down by a run in the 6th inning and Quentin was leading off. The count was full and Greinke ended up hitting Quentin. Instead of Quentin realizing the game situation, he took the beaning personal and thought there was some purposeful intent on Greinke's part. Quentin charged the mound and a brawl ensued. Greinke ended up breaking his collarbone in the scuffle because Quentin charged into him like a wild animal.
This is very bad news for the Dodgers. Greinke is the team's second best starting pitcher and was pitching a solid game last night before the dumbest man from Stanford decided to take a run at him. Greinke will probably miss at least a month and Quentin should receive a lengthy suspension.
This doesn't hurt the Padres as much because their aspirations this season is a 70 win campaign. Now, without Quentin in their line-up for a period of time may put the Padres at 68 wins this year. The Dodgers are geared for a playoff run and are contenders for a division title. Losing Greinke for several weeks will hurt the Dodgers and their playoff chances.
I was really at the point last night, of writing an even angrier and meaner post. I just wanted to rip into Quentin and slam the entire Padres organization. I am glad that I was able to sleep off some of my anger before writing up a post about the assault that Quentin committed. My anger has subsided slightly this afternoon. It will never completely disappear. Last night's game has made me hate the Padres for the first time in my life. I usually relegate all my baseball hatred to the Giants but, I guess I had a little extra hate in the tank to shift some over to the second tier franchise in San Diego.
Who knew that any baseball fan can actually feel animosity towards the little guys from a beach town? Padre fans probably never knew that a rivalry was actually part of the game of baseball. Now they should know that, pending on if Padre fans have any passion for their team or not.
The Dodgers and Padres meet again at Dodger Stadium early next week and the place should be a madhouse. I really hope Quentin plays in the series so, he can hear some verbal abuse from the rowdies in the outfield pavilions.
Before the Dodgers play the new hated ones, they travel to Arizona to play the Diamondbacks. Clayton Kershaw is on the mound tonight and will look to dominate. These green looking cards were sent to me by Roy from Plain Gray Swatch and I dig the the color scheme on these cards.
They both remind me of apple flavored jolly ranchers. When I get doubles of these cards, I will bite into one just to see if they taste like sour apple.
Seeing cards of Kershaw, makes me a little happier and slightly less angry. If Kershaw dominates tonight and makes the D-Backs look like chumps, then I will feel even better.
This incident between Greinke and Quentin will make me feel bitterness for awhile. This brawl does give me a new found hatred of the Padres. It also makes Quentin a new villain in Dodger lore. Welcome to the scumbag club of trash, Quentin.

The Better Collection
The year 2013 is upon us. I am actually looking forward to the new year. I am usually pessimistic about the new year and expect the worst to happen. Going into 2013, my thought process is more positive and am looking forward to a brighter outlook.
Some people I know may read that opening paragraph and think that I have lost my mind. It is rare when I want to point out positive aspects of life.
In my last post, I talked about going after the 2013 Allen and Ginter set. Set collecting will be a part of the fold for me this year. I have completed insert sets before but, chasing a base set is foreign to me. Trying to hunt down short prints to complete 2013 Allen and Ginter next year is one of the collecting adventures that I look forward to in 2013.
Bill Madlock played 15 seasons in the big leagues. He played about 2 and a half seasons with the Dodgers. He doesn't have too many Dodger relics out there. Brad, from Brad's Blog, had this card above listed as trade bait on his blog. I needed a tiny piece of Madlock's jersey for my collection so, a trade was born.
One of the things that makes Brad a cool dude is that he grew up in the same suburb of Philadelphia that I did. We went to the same schools a couple years apart, we probably bought hoagies and iced tea from the same Wawa.
It's really neat finding a fellow blogger that you have a past link to,that you learned about through a passion for baseball cards.
Aside from set collecting in 2013, I will also make it my goal to buy some singles of the newer Bowman products. I am not a fan of prospect heavy sets. I need my sets to have star power, scrub relievers and old school ballplayers.
Bowman packs don't even get touched by my hands. I don't even remember opening any Bowman packs in 2012 or maybe even 2011. That is, if any pack of Bowman is memorable.
Bowman also has a lot of parallels to go along with its base set. I probably need to track down several versions of this Clayton Kershaw to have a colorful looking binder page. The chase will be on in the singles bin.
The "Singles Bin"? That should be the name of a new singles bar that I am going to open up in Reseda.
Another thing that makes Brad cool is that he sent me this mini of Julius Caesar. This is back to back trade packages that have sent me a Allen and Ginter insert need.
I am slowly chipping away at those sets and should have at least one completed by this day in 2014.
Thank you for the trade, Brad. Richboro pride!

Thinking Ahead To 2013
The Dodgers recently emailed an order form to purchase mini plan ticket packages. The ticket packages are available for between 10 and 30 games. They also offer packages that include the bobble head games. The Dodgers are going with 10 bobble head giveaways this year.
After the end of every Dodger season, I always proclaim that I will never go back to Dodger Stadium. I say that I will just watch the games at home and listen to Vin Scully. I have a bunch of different reason why I say things like this after the conclusion of the Dodger season. None of those reasons have to do with what transpires on the field.
I have been buying mini plans from the Dodgers since the horrid 2005 season. Jason Phillips got over 400 plate appearances that year. I still happily renewed in 2006.
Since getting the email notice from the Dodgers to renew my tickets, I have pondered whether or not to go back to watch games in person. The seats in the Dodger Stadium pavilions are made of solid wood and are long benches. Sometimes you are crammed tight with complete strangers for 3 hours. The food also needs to improve at the ballpark. The selection in left field is pretty much a Dodger Dog or overly salty nachos. Those picks get boring after a while.
Also, not hearing Scully while I am watching a Dodger game is painful at times. We, Dodger fans are so spoiled hearing him call a game that to see baseball being played without his pleasant voice is a lesser product.
Those are just some of my reasons for contemplating getting a ticket package for 2013.
Even with my whining, of course, I am going to renew. I am addicted to baseball. I am willing to put up with a bunch of crap at the ballpark that is off the field to watch my beloved Dodgers. I probably could never go through a baseball season again without going to Dodger Stadium a bunch and patrolling the left field pavilion with pride.
2013 is going to mark the year, where I stop kidding myself and happily buy tickets for Dodger games months in advance. No more saying that I will never go back. I will always go back.
Matt Kemp plays for the Dodgers. He came up through the team's minor league system, signed a long term deal last year to stay in LA and Kemp is really good at baseball. Kemp is our guy. He can take over ball games for weeks at a time.
Clayton Kershaw will be our opening day starter. It is not even a question who will be on the mound for the Dodgers against the Giants on opening day. I enjoy the stability and knowing that Kershaw can crush his opponents any game he enters. I will be wearing my Kershaw jersey in Dodger Stadium on opening day.
The baseball addiction will never go away.
The Dodger Stadium jumbo tron doesn't show enough replays. The replays they do show seem to be a few minutes after the play took place. That seems way too long in our fast paced times and the television audience probably saw that same replay five times with Scully narrating it.
I can deal with that. I usually watch the replay of the game after I get home from watching the game live. If I feel I missed a play or had an obstructed view, the game will be on by the time I get home and I could re-watch what I missed.
I love seeing a big moment happen while I am in the stadium. The roar of the crowd is enjoyable and feeling the nervous, anticipation that a stadium audience gets when something good or bad is about to happen.
I also don't want to miss watching Andre Ethier hit a baseball. He always seems so angry and focused while out on the field. Kemp smiles a lot and seems to have a relaxed swagger. When Ethier makes an out he seems pissed at the world. That is the same anger that I have watching him make an out at the plate.
I love that passion that he brings to his job. I will feel like I am disappointing Ethier if I wasn't sitting in the outfield cheering him on. He is too angry a dude to disappoint even though he may not even know that I exist or that my praying to the baseball gods help him get base hits.
I am in desperate need for baseball and am having major withdrawals. Hockey season looks doomed and football only has one game a week that I care about.
The Dodgers have Kemp, Kershaw, and Ethier. I will continue to ride the journey with them for our quest for a title. Dodger Stadium will be my part time home on several nights in 2013.
The Dodgers also have Aaron Harang. I love seeing the terrified look that kids have on their faces when they see Harang's face in person.
Hurry up baseball season. I miss you!

Rallying Back
It has been awhile since I have typed up some words at the Platter. I also have cut down on my card buying significantly. I still have a lot of trade packages to scope through and there are still stacks of cards on my bedside. That is the reason for not purchasing many more cards. I have so many that I still need to box, binder and enjoy, sitting right next to me.
The best way for me to get back in the habit and mood for blogging is to write something up that I am most passionate about. A part of blogging that I dig the most is building trade partnerships with people thousands of miles away. Night Owl and I seem to always set cards aside for each other. We send bubble mailers from California to New York about once a month.
There have probably been a handful more blogs that have popped up since my last post. Some of you may be new readers at the Platter. Just to get the new guys acclimated to my blog, I collect all types of Hideo Nomo cards. That may be obvious from the title of my blog. This is also a Dodger themed blog. I collect Nomo in any uniform including his stint in Detroit.
I remember asking Night Owl to set this card aside for me several weeks or several months back. He has many trade partners, I have no idea how he keeps track of all his card swaps.
I love shiny cards of Dodger hall of famers. This card features a young looking Don Sutton. I am so used to seeing Sutton with a curly 'fro that is shocks me that he didn't always rock the curls.
Sutton must have started growing a clownish style of hair as he progressed through his hall of fame career. He must have done so, to hide his big ears.
I have a signed version of this Frank Howard card. The signed version has a Topps Heritage feel and is an on-card autograph. This shiny one is sweet though. I wish the shiny version was signed also.
The Dodgers need a player like Frank Howard right now. The 2012 Dodgers need a big, hulking, right handed hitting first baseman. I am sick of watching James Loney bat. I am also sick of seeing the 2012 Dodgers line-up loaded with lefties against left handed pitching. Give us a righty Ned Colletti!
Hell, get Frank Howard back in the batting box.
Great card of Cy Young winner, Clayton Kershaw. This is when he was repping Team USA as youngster. Kershaw probably knew even back then that he was going to become a beast Doyer.
The Dodgers start a big series against the Frisco Giants tonight in about and hour. Night Owl will probably be watching the game thousands of miles away. Viva Los Doyers!
Thank You!

Ryan Braun Won't Be Pictured Here
The Ryan Braun saga has been big news among baseball fans for weeks now. Braun, as many of you have heard, will not serve a 50 game suspension. He won his appeal and won't miss a game due to his alleged PED use.
My Ryan Braun collection is on hold right now. I will not be excepting anymore of his cards at this time. A new player collection will be introduced this weekend at the Platter.
I just need sometime to relax and not think about Braun and drug testing for a while.
Let me focus on some cards that feature some good guy Dodgers. I made a trade with Dennis and he writes the blog called Pictures of Men. Dennis is a Blue Jay and set collector. He is also a fellow that lives in Canada.
This marks the first time I have traded with a collector in another country. This is another milestone reached at the Platter.
The 1975 Topps Ron Cey that he sent me is in great shape. This card looks to be pack fresh. Maybe Canada is just getting cases of '75 Topps shipped to them. This set may be new and fresh in Canada.
Clayton Kershaw on a Donruss Elite card in a t-shirt tucked into baseball pants. Fans have been clamoring for a Donruss to put out a card like this for years.
Well, not really. But, it is nice to see new Kershaw on a card that isn't Topps. Kershaw will be looking to win another Cy Young this year. I wish him the best of luck, of course.
I am not a big fan of the MLB cards that Donruss Elite has to offer. I like players captured in an action shot or with an interesting background. Players in warm up gear and photographed in a studio comes across kind of tacky to me.
Here is a card that Donruss got right. Jeff Weaver is in the process of striking out some chump. Weaver is making hitters look foolish in this photo.
Players posing in studios is no good. Players being photographed in there element on a baseball field is golden.
Thanks for the trade Dennis!

I Know How To Use a Webcam!
I bought a new laptop a few months back and it came with a webcam. I never used the webcam yet because I am part Neanderthal. This is my first post using it so, I hope it came out well. Please leave me any feedback or suggestions.
Thanks to these guys:

Late Night Trade Post Featuring Night Owl
Very few bloggers out there have the ability to see my collection and fill in the gaps for me, without ever actually seeing my baseball card collection. Night Owl is the Godfather of the Blog World and deserves royal treatment for being a trader with special powers. Well, that is how he gets treated at the Platter. He probably gets rougher treatment at many other establishments.
Since, I have picked up a new laptop, my haves lists have been getting updated more frequently. I still have a big stack of Dodgers to go through and catalog on Microsoft Excell. One day I will hire a secretary to catalog my collection. Just a person that will type out the cards I have and let me know what cards I am looking for. I still enjoy putting new Dodgers in binders. I will never give my secretary that job.
Oh wait, I probably will never even have a secretary that tends to my cataloging needs.
Let me start out by showing a couple cards featuring some past Dodger greats. This is a really nice looking set and Upper Deck uses a smooth, glossy touch. Upper Deck may have touched up the Johnny Podres card a bit. The photo looks way to clean to have been taken several decades ago.
Seeing modern cards with past players got me to thinking. The card companies will always put past players in there recent releases. Collectors for the most part like seeing the past stars of there team on new cardboard with touched up photos. So, this trend will never end in the collecting world. Since, I am a big collector of Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, I will have an endless supply of there cards to collect.
Kemp and Kershaw are on there way to becoming Dodger icons. I am totally biased though. I just feel the both of them will be the core of some great Dodger teams in the future. Therefore, the images of Kershaw and Kemp will adorn cardboard in 2040. Topps or whoever is running the card industry that far into the future will pop out a Heritage Refractor like this one into its 2045 set and call it retro.
My Kemp and Kershaw collection will go on forever.
Awesome! A Rickey Henderson card as a Dodger. Henderson is not featured on cardboard as a Dodger very often due to his brief stint with the team.
The back of this 1997 SPX Hideo Nomo card is better than the front. The front is pretty cool, it is a 90s holographic image of Nomo But, I just can't help but focus on this "action" shot of Nomo.
What exactly is he doing? His legs seem to be in an awkward position. Is he dancing? Maybe the snapshot caught him doing the Ickey Shuffle.
Card of the year according to Night Owl. I also agree with that statement. This is a great action shot. I know exactly what Dee Gordon is doing here. He is turning a double play against Colorado at Coors Field.
I hope that Dee Gordon does well on the field. Of course, I do because I am a Doyer fan. But, I also hope that Gordon's career on baseball cards is superb as well. He is a high energy, speedster that makes spectacular fielding plays. Gordon is destined for cardboard glory!
Night Owl also threw in a Ascent of Man card that I needed. I am almost done with this set. I will have to update my set needs page up top and add the other 2011 Ginter insert sets that I am collecting. The Ascent of Man set will look picturesque once completed. All the cards of this set fit together like a puzzle and cover the whole landscape of the evolution of mankind.
Thanks,Night Owl!

Never to Late to Give Thanks
I have had trade packages piling up on me for awhile. They just pop out of no where. I think that I have caught up, blogged about them and put them in the appropriate binders or boxes. But, the bubble mailers must have a life of there own. They crawl and hide. Then they reappear and jump at the chance to be featured at the Platter.
Julie from the blog Things are Funner Here sent me some great cards. I am trying to complete Dodger Topps sets from the 70s. Julie sent me two 79s of Charlie Hough and Manny Mota. This puts me a little closer to completing the team sets from the 70s. I am still very far away from accomplishing my goal because the sets are huge each year. I hope to at least complete one year by the end of 2011.
This is a 2009 Bowman Blue Clayton Kershaw #ed/500. I am a fan of parallels because they look good in a binder. When you get a bunch of parallels and set them in a plastic page, the whole page just pops with colors.
The blue border of this card looks really nice. It gives the appearance of 60s cool. Bowman gives this card a non-intended retro look.
The first card is a 2010 Topps reprint of a late 90s card. It makes me feel old when cards of my youth are being reprinted. Topps shouldn't have done this. It is way to soon to be reprinting cardboard from the 90s. I also don't remember this card being considered a classic that Topps just had to remake.
I do remember the interleague match-up between the Dodgers and Mariners in the late 90s to be pretty cool. As a kid, I had a great time getting to watch Ken Griffey Jr. play at Dodger Stadium. The Mariners had some really good teams back then.
Julie also sent me a bunch of Ichiro cards. The 2004 Fleer Ultra Ichiro is my favorite one of the bunch. The photo is great and Ichiro is in deep concentration just before he walks up to the plate to do some damage.
Things are Funner Here is hosting a contest. Please head on over and take a peak.
I also got a package from David of the greatly named blog called e rayahahn, rayhahn. I got David's bubble mailer about a month ago. I forget what I sent his way. It must have been something good to get this 2008 Upper Deck X Andre Ethier GU.
I am not sure about the background of this card. I do know that this is a card featuring Ichiro. This card is shaped like a square as opposed to a rectangle. I do want to know more about this set. The card is a 2009 Fan Pak Headlines.
Did this card come from a Mariners fan pack? Was this a Seattle giveaway?
I would like to thank both of you for the great cards. Keep up the great work on your blogs.

Raidering and Writing a Trade Post
Today was a good day for me. My day started early by making a drive out to Pasadena to watch the Raiders/Texans game with some friends. We had the usual fun times with morning beer drinking and shouting. The Raiders won today in honor of the late Al Davis. It is weird for me to think that the Raiders won't be run by Al Davis. I truly believed that Al Davis would out live me.
After watching the Raiders win in dramatic fashion, I made a trek from Pasadena to Tarzana in the valley to stop by the card shop. I was going there to meet up with Josh from Dodgerbobble. Normally, a trek like Pasadena to Tarzana is a tough task. But, today the freeways were clear and the sun was shining. Well, I live in LA, the sun is always shining. I made it to the shop very quickly. I believe that Al Davis cleared the way for me to give thanks for all the times that I have defended him to Raider haters as well as fellow Raider fans.
Before, this starts to sound like my October 9th journal entry, lets get to the trade post. This package was sent to me by Napkin Doon, who is a great trader and has an awesome blog name.
I love serial cards from the 90s. You know, the cards with the extremely high serial number but, was meant to show scarcity. For some reason, as a kid, I never pulled any cards like this Eric Karros #ed/6000. I may have been opening up to much Collector's Choice back then.
These were the cards that got my interest when Napkin Doon posted them on his blog. The Topps Chrome this year looks really nice. I am glad that Topps had made the proper changes to make up for last year's debacle.
The Ryan Braun card shares the design of 1995 Topps. I opened up a lot of 1995 Topps packs as a kid. The design brings me back to my glory days at age 12.
I am not sure if Ivan DeJesus Jr. will ever get a fair shake with the Dodgers. He had a breakout year in the minors a few years back and then broke his leg. He has been trying to bounce back and prove his worth to the team. He didn't do much with only a handful of at-bats at the major league level this year. Next year may be his last chance to make a strong impression with the Dodgers before they ship him off to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is where GM Ned Colletti sends Dodger prospects to disappear.
Minis! Minis are awesome, especially retro minis. 2 out of 3 of these guys will be in different uniforms by next July. In my world, Clayton Kershaw is going to be a Dodger lifer. I hope I am write. I haven't invested this much love in a player since Mike Piazza. I don't think I would be able to get over it, if I saw Kershaw in another uniform.
Thanks for the trade,Napkin Doon.

I Met Clayton Kershaw!!!!!!!!
Over the weekend I had the great privilege of meeting the wonderful Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw was at a free autograph signing in La Mirada,CA at a Living Spaces. I knew this was going to be a crazy event. Kershaw is wildly popular in LA and he should be wildly popular all over the country but, that is a post for another day. There were hundreds of people at this event. I have know idea how what the exact number was but it was the crowd was immense. My party and I arrived around 5am for a scheduled 10am signing. There were already at least hundred people ahead of us in line.
This wasn't the most organized autograph session that I have been to. It was the most crowded. At one point when the Living Spaces employee started handing out wristbands, a mob began rushing towards her. People were cutting in line and getting rowdy. Luckily, the Living Spaces staff got there act together and handed out wristbands in a more orderly fashion.
The rush and disorganization by the Living Spaces staff could have been worse than it was. I was just thinking that this event could turn into a mini riot considering there were hundreds of people in line who have been there for several hours. It could have turned into another blemish on the Dodgers season to go along with the Bryan Stow beating, Frank McCourt and the on-field problems. But, I am thankful that Living Spaces settled the crowd down and the event went smooth after the initial chaos.
Kershaw seemed a little overwhelmed when he came in through the front door of the store. I think he was shocked that that many people had came to meet him.
The ball that I got signed was from a complete game that Kershaw pitched against the Florida Marlins earlier this year. The ball was pitched by Kershaw to Omar Infante and Infante hit a screaming liner right at my dad. We were sitting in the 5th row by third base. My dad quickly put up his hands to defend himself and the line drive bounced off his wrist. Luckily, he only got a bruise and we got the ball. Now that same ball is signed by Clayton Kershaw!
Since, I went to this event with Josh from Dodgerbobble, I was able to swing a trade. I traded him an in person Mark Trumbo autograph that we got together a couple weeks back. I love GUs that are from specific events. So, I picked up this Rafael Furcal GU workout jersey from last year's all star game. Great card from soon to be ex-Doyer.

Trades Are Funner With Julie And Fuji
I have made several trades with Julie over at the blog Things are Funner here. But, the package that she sent me may have topped all the other ones that she has sent me. Julie was nice enough to include some of the things that she got from the Dodger Fan Pack she received. I was surprised that the Dodgers sent out such nice things such as player photos, key chains, stickers, pocket schedules and a magnet schedule. I just assumed that since the team has been in the hands of Frank McCourt, that every part of the team was run with cheapness on the mind.
One of the two photos that were included was of Clayton Kershaw. The other photo was of James Loney. Kershaw may have surpassed Andre Ethier, in my mind, as my favorite current Dodger. If I get lucky and have tickets to a game that Kershaw is starting, I have an extra excitement in me on my way to the ballpark. When Kershaw pitches, you have a chance to see greatness. I have had the honor to be at his two complete shutout games. His second one being a complete game two hit shutout of the Detroit Tigers just a few days ago. I hope the next owner of the Dodgers gives Kershaw a huge contract. Keep him in LA for several years to come.
Julie also sent me some cards. She sent me this Shawn Green GU for a Roy Oswalt GU that I sent her way. My Green collection is growing pretty well. Card companies seemed to have made a lot of game used cards of him. Oh yeah, this one is numbered out of 100. Sweet!
I love the paper parallels for 2011 Gypsy Queen. It makes the design a lot better and more regal than the regular base card version. I also like how Sprint kind of gets a free advertisement on this card. I guess that is one of the perks of being a stadium sponsor. You know your ad will pop up on TV or even baseball cards.
I am really glad that Sandy Koufax is popping up in Topps products this year. It was awesome for Julie to send this one to me. Koufax is a Dodger icon, a baseball icon and a cultural icon. He is above everyone. At least in the world of Spiegel. Koufax can walk on water and fly like Superman. Koufax has an open invite to have dinner at the Spiegel household. He has yet to except but, I hope he will someday.
Thanks for the trade, Julie! We'll get another one going next month as usual.
I also received a card from Fuji who runs the blog called the Chronicles of Fuji. This trade was a lot smaller. He told me he was running out of space to keep all his cards so, he was just going after certain players. This was a simple one GU for one GU trade.
I sent Fuji a Walt Weiss bat relic for his Oakland A's PC and he sent me this Shawn Green GU. I love the blueness of this card. Shawn Green has been on a book tour all over LA recently. I have yet to attend one yet. My collection is lacking a Shawn Green autograph. Thanks for the card Fuji. You should get yours in the mail by Saturday or Monday.
