The Best Blogging Name

I have had some days off of work recently.  My latest days off have had me spend some time on organizing my baseball card collection.  This mostly consists of updating my various lists at the Platter as well as cataloging my collection on Microsoft Excel.

I never fully realize how many individual cards I own of my favorite players until I scroll down to the bottom of a spreadsheet and start typing.  My benchmark for placing a singular player collection into its own personal binder is 200 cards.  Once a player collection reaches that milestone, then he gets his very own binder for storage.  I even write his name on a white shipping label and stick it on the binder.  I go that extra mile for the players that I adore.

Ichiro is one of those players that I have had the pleasure of watching play the game of baseball since his debut in 2001.  I have seen him play baseball in-person on a few occasions at Dodger Stadium and in Arizona during spring training.  His style of hitting is still interesting for me to watch.

The lunging and quick sweep of his bat through the hitting zone is a joy to see.  The speed that he had when he first debuted in the United States was like watching a track star round the bases.  Some players create a certain buzz and murmur throughout the ballpark.  Ichiro has that effect on baseball fans no matter if he is at home or on the road.

The Diamond King sent me a slew of Ichiro cards as part of a trade we made.  The Diamond King lives in the marijuana loving state of Washington and that is the place where Ichiro used to patrol the outfield tracking down fly balls.  I am not saying that the Diamond King is a marijuana user, I am just stating that his neighbors probably partake in Washington's favorite past time.

Ichiro is a solo binder guy for me.  After receiving this awesome trade package from the Pacific Northwest, I am almost at the 300 mark for Ichiro baseball cards.  Not only has Ichiro been a great ballplayer, but he has been a hobby superstar since his 2001 rookie season.  He has many cards out there for me to track down and I will probably have close to 400 Ichiro cards by the end of 2014.

Ichiro has been an electrifying baseball player and the card companies have done a swell job capturing this on cardboard.  Flipping through my Ichiro binder is one of my favorite page turners of my collection.  My Ichiro binder is a close number two to my solo Hideo Nomo binder.

The Diamond King was kind enough to send me some cards that are new to my collection.  They are also new to my eyes since I haven't seen them on the internet or anywhere else.  Maybe one of my readers can inform me on the origins of the Topps/Nestle team-up.

Was this card in a package of ice cream bars at some point?  What do freezing temperatures do to baseball cards?

I love oddball cards of the players that I collect.  They add an extra layer of uniqueness to a binder page. This Upper Deck Pepsi card may have been a stadium giveaway in Seattle?  I say this because there is a logo for a 25th year anniversary of some sort.

I wish more stadiums and modern food companies would release sets again.  I would buy a lot more loaves of bread or boxes of sugary cereal if baseball cards were included.

The Dodgers have about 81 home games a year, where they distribute bobbles of current and past boys in blue.  Maybe they can squeeze in one day and hand out an exclusive pack of baseball cards.  That may get at least one kid introduced to our glorious hobby.

That Is How It Is Done

Being able to write a solid trade post is a basic element of being a baseball card blogger.  A trade post may be the most common type of post written by members of the blog world.  It is a good way to show appreciation to the person that sent a bundle of cardboard your way.  Sometimes I feel extra pressure in writing one of these trade posts.  I want to show proper respect, not only because of the cards that I have received, but also to show respect to the blogger who's writing that I enjoy.

Nick, from the blog famous Dime Boxes blog, is one of the better writers that the card collecting community has.  His posts are frequent, well worded and just plain interesting.  I have read almost all of his posts and sometimes if I miss a few, I will go back and read them to catch up.  Nick may mention a little collecting endeavor that he is working on such as players signing autographs or players dressed in clothes that aren't their baseball uniforms.  I don't want to miss out on what type of new category that Nick is going to collect next.

Take the time to check out his blog and you will come away impressed.  When it comes time to type a trade post about a blogger with superior writing skills to me, that adds some pressure not to disappoint the one reader that will greatly appreciate the words that I am typing.

Now let me show you some of the top cards that Nick sent my way.  Not only can he write well, but Nick knows how to bundle up some quality cards that make it to my mailbox.

The first card that I would like to show off is a card featuring me.  This picture of my likeness was.....wait one second.  This card has Ichiro's name written on the bottom.

This must be some sort of super rare error card.  No wonder Major League Baseball gave Topps an exclusive license instead of Panini.  Topps never makes errors this egregious.

Now here is an actual baseball card of Ichiro.  This a great action shot of Ichiro slapping a double down the line at Wrigley Field.  If you look really close, you can see Cubs fan Nick in the background.  Those are some nice seats which may be hard to come by in Chicago due to a smallish stadium and a large fan base.

I still don't have an actual, genuine Dodger Frank Robinson card.  This is as close as it gets for me.  I have a reprint of a Dodger Frank Robinson card but, I don't count that.  This was a sadly airbrushed 1973 Topps card of Robinson.

This card is so close to being a Dodger card.  Robinson is in a Dodger uniform, this photo was taken at Dodger Stadium and the game was played against the Phillies.  The team name of the California Angels sticks out and it feels like it is being rubbed in my face.

I also find it arrogant that at one point in the Angels history, they claimed to be the team of California.  I am sure fans of the other teams in California have something unkind to say about that.  The name California Angels is almost as bad as their current name which I won't even mention.

Are sunglasses one of the fashion accessories that are timeless?  Style of sunglasses worn decades ago, still look grand today.  People still wear the style that Steve Yeager is sporting on this 1981 Fleer card and they look good while wearing them even if they are ugly.

Nick once again impressed me with the wide variety of cards that he sent me.  He sent me all types of cards that are going to look good in binders.  I can't wait until our next trade because he is a collector with enough collecting categories that it makes for a fun search.

Always Happy When It's Free

The latest Dodger news over the last few days has my head spinning.  It seems so long since the team had owners that were willing to make moves to try and win championships.  Not moves that would make the team possibly good but, moves that may make the team great.

The Dodgers getting Zack Greinke is amzing to me.  This was a pure baseball decision from the Guggenheim ownership group.  The Dodgers needed a #2 starter and went out and bought one.  I have been waiting for an acquisition like this for years.

The real baseball world throws around big money to get what they want.  I can't survive in that world.  Luckily, I reside in the blog world and we can get some free cards just for being here.

Baseball Dad from All Tribe Baseball was just willing to give free cards out for people that claimed them.  My last post was about some free cardboard goodness that was sent to me by Dennis from Too Many Verlanders.

I will keep this them going for the rest of December.  So many nice bloggers are taking their time and adding nice cards to my collection that they will always get a mention on the Platter.

I have been seeing some boxes of Upper Deck MVP being opened on some blogs.  I enjoy the sleek, modern design.

The black border with a greenish center reminds me of mint chocolate chip ice cream.  That is a good thing.

This photo just doesn't quite cut it for me.  I can't keep my eyes off of Ichiro's left elbow.  The rest of his arm appears missing.  Someone needs to give him the rest of his arm back.

Fleer Ultra was a good competitor with Topps Stadium Club as far as photography goes.  Both products have churned out great sets over the years that were photography gold.

This Ichiro may be excused.

Those Ichiro cards were thrown in as extras because Baseball Dad is a cool dude.  This Eddie Murray was the card that I claimed.  My hall of fame Angels collection is lacking.  It mainly consists of about a dozen Rod Carews, a Nolan Ryan and maybe a Reggie Jackson or two.

Adding to my hall of fame collection is my top goal right now.  You may click on my "Current Goals" link to check out what my other priorities are right now.

This card makes me wonder about something.  When people were ripping packs of Topps in the 70s, did they ever wonder what baseball cards would look like decades later?

Did any collectors in the 70s think that a card would be made with a hologram, a die-cut "X", and an aging Eddie Murray awkwardly trying to catch a pop-up?

Retail Satisfaction

During the baseball off season, card purchasing plummets for me.  When the baseball season ends, I kind of need a break from watching baseball as well as collecting cards of the sport.  My time with my collection is used mostly for organizing and getting ready for 2013 Topps.  I will be ready and prepared for that day.

I haven't bought much 2012 Topps Update, even though I have enjoyed the last two editions.  I like seeing players on fresh cardboard, featured with their new team.  This is a thought that I believed to be 100% true.  That is until I picked up a 2012 Topps Update blaster just to try and acquire the many Dodgers and inserts that I still need.

This Ichiro card doesn't bother me too much.  I already have a couple of his cards that feature him in a Yankee uniform.

Ichiro looks happy to be announced as a Yankee.  Playing in Seattle the last few years or so has had to be awful.  This Ichiro card will stay in my collection.  The Yankee-ness isn't too prevalent to annoy me.

This card here is way too Yankee for me.  I love watching Ichiro play but, that huge manupatch NY logo is just obnoxious.

Sorry, Ichiro, but this card is for trade.  Anyone that wants to trade me a Dodger manupatch or a Hall of Fame manupatch, please let me know.

This was my guaranteed fake patch in the blaster.  This isn't a bad one to pull with enough Ichiro fans out there that will be interested in this card.

Now onto cards that I pulled that will stay in my collection.  Matt Kemp baseball cards will always be welcome at the Platter.  This is a nice looking card of Matt Kemp celebrating a walk off victory.  He is also probably in a joyous mood because he knows that he will have his pick of the ladies at a Hollywood night club post game.

This card is of a golden moment that took place on April 28, 2012.  Kemp crushed a 10th inning home run to give the Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals.  This game is also significant because this was Kemp's 11th home run in the month of April.  This feat moved him past Gary Sheffield for most ever in the month of April by a Doyer.  Knocking Sheffield down the Dodger record books is always a good thing.

There is also one more reason why this game will be noted in the history books for.  This game marked the debut of Bryce Harper.  His first game was at Dodger Stadium with over 54,000 fans in the seats.

The pride of Sherman Oaks, Giancarlo Stanton, is in a tough position.  Stanton is a guy that the Marlins should be building around.  Did you know that Stanton had a slugging percentage of .608 last season?  Did you also know that he is only 22 and hit 37 bombs last year?

This dude is legit and should be on a team with aspirations of winning now and not retooling for the future.  It would be a shame not to see someone of Stanton's talent playing in crucial games in September and getting a chance to play in a pressure packed playoff game in October.

The baseball world will want to see Stanton with those opportunities.

Everybody's Favorite New Blog

Since the debut of a blog called, Dime Boxes-The Low End Baseball Card Collector's Journey, the blog world has been showing tons of love for the blog creator, Nick.  Nick writes great post after great post.  He writes a couple posts a day.  He may even write three a day at times.  The kid is a machine.

Nick writes quality posts about his massive collection that he amasses by digging through glorious dime boxes.  He also has a wide range of collections.  I have a feeling that Nick would get some joy, if you sent him a bubble mailer full of cards that just look cool.  Some nice photography, maybe an oddball card or some random vintage.

Between writing a ton of posts, Nick actually has time to trade.  I told you he is a machine.  I received on nice lot from Nick.  The bubble mailer was full of Japanese player cards and some cards from my player collections.  A really nice variety.  Some of the cards probably resided in a dime box somewhere for weeks, maybe even months.  It wasn't until Nick saved these cards from an old, crusty card dealer that they could find a good home.  A home that will cherish Jeff Weaver cards with him wearing the grand Doyer uniform with the ugly "A" on the bottom of the card.  Thank you for rescuing these cards, brother.

I just had to give some back story for these cards.  It helps me appreciate them better.

This is a nice shiny Takashi Saito card from 2008 Spectrum.  Laser beams seem to be shooting out from behind Saito.  Upper Deck must have gotten this laser beam idea from a Michael Jackson music video during the "Off the Wall" era.

Good call, Upper Deck.

Nick sent me a slew of Ichiro cards.  These are a couple of my favorites.  An Ichiro card from 2001 always fits into my collection.  Especially one with some snazzy coloring and a circular photo.  I just dig the 2002 Leaf design on the next card.

Nick was kind enough to give me a lot of Ichiro cards.  He must have a lot of dupes in his collection.  Ichiro's baseball career is winding down.  I wonder what he is going to do in his post playing career.  I hope he stays in the MLB in some capacity.

From Ichiro Suzuki to Kurt Suzuki, here is some 2012 Topps Gold.  Everybody has seen these.  I still haven't gotten too many of them for my Dodger and player collections.  Has 2012 Topps been a flop? Has the blog world successfully boycotted this product?  The '87 minis haven't been showing up in my mailbox too often neither.

I am trying to not buy packs of these.  I may have to buy some to try and get the cards I need.  I would rather try to trade for the gold parallels.

I love the Cracker Jack sets.  If I was collecting in 2005, I would have been busting boxes of this product.  The retro look with the bright colors works well.  This set may have over saturated the retro set market at the time.  But, it stands the test of time.

With all the praise that Nick gets for his blog, he is probably brimming with confidence.  All the compliments hasn't stopped him from posting on a daily basis.  He hasn't hit the wall or gotten lazy yet.  Keep up the good work, Nick.  Thanks for the trade.

26 Cent Fuji

The name 26 Cent Fuji would work great for a rapper.  The rapper would be a Japanese dude of below average height and speed rap skills like Busta Rhymes.  26 Cent Fuji would also get critical acclaim from music writers for his debut album.  The rapper would also be mildly popular for the summer season.

But, this post isn't about fictional rappers.  This is a trade post to give thanks to some great bloggers.

My first trade with 26 Cent Summer was a great success.  Matt is the dude that runs the blog and posts about the Kansas City Royals.  I sent him an Aaron Crow Auto/GU and he sent me this Maury Wills GU.  The piece of jersey looks to be a grey wool.  The card also states 100% Authentic several times on the front of the card.  Upper Deck just wanted to let there customers know that this is legit.

Matt also sent along this 2011 Topps Ichiro.  This card looks to be the Topps flagship base set from 2025.  This card has a sleek, futuristic look.

I also can't stop thinking about random life plots for the fictional speed rapper, 26 Cent Fuji.  26 Cent Fuji grew up listening to 90s rap.  He did so by having the only portable Sony Mini Disc player ever purchased.  26 Cent Fuji was able to find mini discs on the cheap of such 90s stars as Dr. Dre, Coolio and Skee-Lo.

I have a minor collection of Albert Belle going on.  He was a bad ass slugger in the 90s.  I watched a lot of games featuring some of the good Cleveland Indians teams of the 90s.  Belle could hit a line drive through an outfield wall.  The dude was ripped and always looked pissed off.

Fuji was kind enough to send this one my way.  He is currently looking for some old school A's from the 70s and prior.  He is also looking for some random Giants such as Tim Lincecum and Buster Posey.

Here is a flashy card of Tomo Ohka.  This flashy piece of cardboard fits in nicely to my Japanese ballplayer collection.

26 Cent Fuji would also have a thin mustache like the one that Ohka has on his baseball card.  26 Cent Fuji would get the idea of growing a mustache after seeing Kurt Russell's mustache in "Tombstone".  Sadly, the mustache doesn't make 26 Cent Fuji look tough like Wyatt Earp.

Another Ichiro to add to my collection.  Ichiro may have the most cards of mine that are waiting to be cataloged.  Nomo was ahead of him but, I cataloged and put a bunch of those away.  This week's goal is to get some Ichiro cards sorted out.

The Diamond King and I

I believe this is the second trade that I have made with the great Diamond King.  He runs a very cool blog and is currently going through his favorite players based on position.  The Diamond King is also one of the better names in the blog world.  I hope people call him that around his neighborhood.

These two cards are what sparked the trade between us.  These are promo cards that probably came out just before the sets were released and given out to dealers to create a buzz in the collecting world.  The 1995 Donruss Promo is a rookie card of Hideo Nomo.  I have the regular base card but, now I have the promo card to set beside it in my Nomo binder.  The second card is a 1998 Topps Tek Rauuuul Mondesi card.  The back of the card where the number is, says "pre-production" on it.  This Tek set is awesome.  It feels like a credit card.  I love cardboard but, I also like cards made out of metal or plastic.

The Diamond King also threw in some Jackie Robinson cards.  The 2001 Upper Deck Jackie has Dodgers written in what feels like felt.  Upper Deck was striving for a look of stitching on the card.  Very nice touch.  I love cards from the "Baseball's All Time Greats" sets.  I am not sure how many different releases that they have.  I know there are different colored borders.

The Diamond King hooked me up with a few 1981 Topps cards!  My chase continues to get a chunk of cards from this set.  The 1981 Topps sets is one of my favorites.  I have been searching for the Kirk Gibson from this set for awhile and now it's mine.  I still have a bunch more that I am looking for from this set.  Please click on my set needs up top and let me know if you have any for trade.

Ichiro with some shine!  Upper Deck used the Topps Refractor look to commemorate Ichiro's 1,000th hit.  The 2009 Allen and Ginter National Pride set looks really cool.  The rising sun behind Ichiro looks good on cardboard.  The Diamond King also included several other Ichiro cards which is much appreciated.

Trades Are Funner With Julie And Fuji

I have made several trades with Julie over at the blog Things are Funner here.  But, the package that she sent me may have topped all the other ones that she has sent me.  Julie was nice enough to include some of the things that she got from the Dodger Fan Pack she received.  I was surprised that the Dodgers sent out such nice things such as player photos, key chains, stickers, pocket schedules and a magnet schedule.  I just assumed that since the team has been in the hands of Frank McCourt, that every part of the team was run with cheapness on the mind. 

One of the two photos that were included was of Clayton Kershaw.  The other photo was of James Loney.  Kershaw may have surpassed Andre Ethier, in my mind, as my favorite current Dodger.  If I get lucky and have tickets to a game that Kershaw is starting, I have an extra excitement in me on my way to the ballpark.  When Kershaw pitches, you have a chance to see greatness.  I have had the honor to be at his two complete shutout games.  His second one being a complete game two hit shutout of the Detroit Tigers just a few days ago.  I hope the next owner of the Dodgers gives Kershaw a huge contract.  Keep him in LA for several years to come.

Julie also sent me some cards.  She sent me this Shawn Green GU for a Roy Oswalt GU that I sent her way.  My Green collection is growing pretty well.  Card companies seemed to have made a lot of game used cards of him.  Oh yeah, this one is numbered out of 100.  Sweet!

I love the paper parallels for 2011 Gypsy Queen.  It makes the design a lot better and more regal than the regular base card version.  I also like how Sprint kind of gets a free advertisement on this card.  I guess that is one of the perks of being a stadium sponsor.  You know your ad will pop up on TV or even baseball cards.

I am really glad that Sandy Koufax is popping up in Topps products this year.  It was awesome for Julie to send this one to me.  Koufax is a Dodger icon, a baseball icon and a cultural icon.  He is above everyone.  At least in the world of Spiegel.  Koufax can walk on water and fly like Superman.  Koufax has an open invite to have dinner at the Spiegel household.  He has yet to except but, I hope he will someday.

Thanks for the trade, Julie!  We'll get another one going next month as usual.

I also received a card from Fuji who runs the blog called the Chronicles of Fuji.  This trade was a lot smaller.  He told me he was running out of space to keep all his cards so, he was just going after certain players.  This was a simple one GU for one GU trade.

I sent Fuji a Walt Weiss bat relic for his Oakland A's PC and he sent me this Shawn Green GU.  I love the blueness of this card.  Shawn Green has been on a book tour all over LA recently.  I have yet to attend one yet.  My collection is lacking a Shawn Green autograph.  Thanks for the card Fuji.  You should get yours in the mail by Saturday or Monday.
